Cluny Chapman – Archaeological Inspirations

Yesterday we were treated to a journey through time from the Stone Age to Roman times.
Cluny Chapman’s work is often influenced by archaeology which is not surprising as she studied Archaeological Science at Bradford University. Archaeology is all about layers which she tries to replicate in her textile pieces in various ways.
Cluny was taught to stitch from an early age by her mother and grandmother (a skill sadly not passed on by many today). She uses a wide variety of techniques in her work including needle felting, goldwork, whitework,  canvaswork and even makes her own lace!
She also keeps Shetland and Wensleydale sheep and often uses their fleece in her work.
